Gday Camden-ites
I was reading the paper a few days ago and I came across an advertisement by I quite well known whitegoods company. Now before I continue I must underline, highlight and draw your attention to the fact that is was a whitegood (a dryer to be exact) being advertised.
The ad generally stated that this tumble dryer was “Sustainable”, and went on to say “…minimal impact on the environment”.
What…please come again?…I think I missed that….sorry!
How, on Gods green earth, is a tumble dryer sustainable? The sun shines practically everyday, the wind characteristically blows in any given direction at roughly some time of the day. You have everything needed to dry your clothes just out the backdoor. It’s free, it’s forever and it truly is sustainable.
Maybe I should list all the reason how a tumble dryer isn’t sustainable…have you got all day? Maybe just in dot points: energy to manufacture, resources used to create, transport, ongoing costs, household energy consumption, eventual disposal of appliance….or you can use sun, wind and a little effort to peg up the washing. Done.
So next time a company tries to sell its product as sustainable, just have a little think about it. Because a tumble dryer photographed next to a tree with rainbows and butterflies doesn’t mean a thing.
Thats my rant for this week. See you at the next Market!
Matt,
